ANNOUNCEMENT - There are currently major problems with group chats, after the chat system update early on June 22, 2023

On desktop browser, as well as the official iOS app, all existing group chats of more than 5 people or so, have disappeared. The link in the sidebar on the desktop version of the sub still "works," but even I (the user who created it) can't get into it.

I haven't updated the Android app, the only piece of software on which these chats are still listed, out of concern that they will no longer be listed there either.

We'll see if these issues get addressed in the near future. But we may have to wait until the promised persistent chat channels feature gets implemented, if group chats continue to be deprecated.

The screen seen when clicking on the link to the public chat in the sidebar:

Clicking '"Continue the Chat" brings up this:

And the Accept button there does NOTHING. Not even for me.

And the text entry field is often gone as well.

UPDATE: now the link in the sidebar has stopped functioning completely

UPDATE #2: As of the morning of June 24, 2023 chat seems to be working again, but there are still some minor issues with chats on the official iOS app

Also, no new people can be added to the public chat, as it exceeds the 100 member limit. The workaround for that no longer works.

All this is more proof of why people are so pissed off at being forced to rely on the official apps, since half the time Reddit doesn't seem to know what the hell they're doing

FYI, the Chat Channels feature, which was plugged in a recent mod newsletter, is supposed to be an open channel to which anyone can subscribe, as was possible when Reddit's chat system was created several years ago.

They're to be assigned to each subreddit. And the mods can set rules such as karma level or account age limits in order to join.

Hey techno, do you know whats going to happen to the sub as a whole after the month is up?

Nobody should be concerned about subs being removed, unless I guess it's an entirely NSFW sub.

It's the way that people access the site that's currently up in arms.

However recent moves by the admins seem to indicate that even NSFW subs are unlikely to be purged from the site. They'll just be prohibited from displaying ads so as not to offend potential advertisers. And won't be visible anywhere but in the official app or desktop site.

We might want to seriously consider to go the discord route. Opening a discord server

One of our moderators already sent one of those up:

https://discord.gg/Qfu6yw2

And it can certainly be used until Reddit gets its shit together…

Everybody would of course much prefer that everything be in house and on one platform 🙄

Thus why I despise "high level" programmers.

They don't seem to care who they put out of business, using their own software.

Hardware programmers can never obsolete existing users. They'd have to take all the customer service calls themselves.

It's from the public "All Students Chat." And I doubt 🤞 that it's closed. Just having access issues...

discord is pretty cool, you can have different chat rooms for different topics.

you can also have informational tabs like basics of darkroom, silence techniques, rules for the group etc.

I just created a new Discord account that has the same text formatting and profile pic as the one I'm using here.

But I don't want to, or need to, take over u/Lidotska 's gig.

I'll look into it. But since that seems to revolve around your phone number, it looks to be more difficult to interact anonymously.

I use the service, but do so under my actual name....
