Hello everyone, new to the subreddit and reddit in general. I had been following this subreddit for a while now, a few months, just never dared to post. I had been studying for many years Carlos Castañeda´s books, since they appeared when I was a child in Romania. Yet I never encountered a serious community based on practice and was amazed to find one exists. I found you guys some time ago when I was trying to practice what was "finding the spot" and accidentally started to see colors so I did a google search to see if this has happened to anyone and well this is how I found the subreddit. Just wanted to share my difficulty in silencing my mind. Is as if when I sit and try to quiet my mind it gets even worst. I do some tensegrity first, the serie that I learnt and then sit in the darkness, bought some goggles which I covered with tape so I can use even if is not complete darkness in my room. At first I see a lot of movement and colors surrounding me, so much sometimes that it get's me dizzy, but then my mind starts and is like the more I try to force it the worst it gets, to the point where I get super annoyed with myself and just stop the practice just to stop myself from spiraling. I work at home on my own terms doing digital art and I have lots of time on my hands and sometimes is really hard to discipline myself to do what matters, my mind is extreamely hard to put to rest, even falling asleep is so hard for me because it just won't shut up. Do any of you experience something so terribly excruciating when learning to get silent? Any small tips? Tried binaural beats, focusing on breath, keeping my tongue suspended and a bunch of other stuff, yet there it is ....
Thanks in advance!
I

Don’t stop practicing, practice more, try turning off internal dialogue while driving, walking, working, every chance you get. Silencing the internal dialogue is a forever struggle for everyone. You’ll get there.
I read somewhere in the sub that relaxing your tongue helps, it helped me.
Jadey’s series for Inner Silence:
I tried this but most of the time it feels like I'm emptying my head and in "autopilot" mode. am I doing it wrong?
I can’t say that’s how you’re supposed to feel. If there’s no thinking/talking or visualizing then I guess you could say, you’ve emptied your mind; I would call that inner silence. If you mean muscle memory when you say, Autopilot thats what you need to function and do the passes while silent.
I’m not there yet, I’ve been practicing almost a year and I still pause to think what pass/movement comes next, and/or if I’ve missed a movement, etc. I just take it in stride and keep going without any expectations.
One post that has really been tremendously helpful for me is this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/castaneda/comments/1bxemje/inner_silence_is_sleepwalking/
Techno recently said that as you keep practicing, you will need to concede and accept you are dreaming right now.
Oh, what a great article! Thank you so much for posting this! This is extremely helpful because I understood that the humans developed the internal dialogue as a by product of the mind which in turn is an evolutionary tool halfway through it's evolution. We use the internal dialogue to sooth ourselves and make sense of things in the tonal but we are completely incapable of putting it to rest when we do not need it. Beyond that is also a terrible cage that traps our attention on ideological views of the culture that created the language we speak to ourselves in. So since is a human thing, I was thinking of animals who seem to be in a non verbal state when they do not need to focus attention on something yet I was not sure that thats the state of inner silence we need to revert too. This article nailed it! Thanks a lot!
Thank you for the link! Quitting is not an option, of course I will keep going, just wanted to make sure my failure in not pathological and well I am interested in different experiences from practitioners, as is pretty useless to have this kind of conversations with people in general. I was reading the subreddit about how to start doing darkroom and comparing, my progression seems backwards, as if my mind started to develop a kind of resistance and it activates worst when I try to silence it. First session of meditation focusing on breath worked better I feel in comparison to how I am now. I see people progressing as they go further, mine is backwards and just don´t know how to tackle it thats all.
I also notice how the tiniest stimuli activates a memory which in turn activates a whole cascade of dialogue and memories and thoughts, is like a stream that gets activated from the tiniest stimuli such as a sound, a bodily feeling etc...
Thank you for your input!
Welcome!
Cheers
Being aware of the resistance is a good thing and is a step ahead of total ignorance. Don't worry, you will have to work in the mud for a long time yet. It often feels like you are going nowhere when you are infact moving.
Mimic the internal dialogue. Doing so shows you the spaces between thought and releases the identification between them all
Thank you but how do you mimic the internal dialogue?
Example your walking in a crowded space and you notice the thought/voice “get out of my way”… repeat that thought and then even speak it out loud a few times, it will start to lose its charge and you most likely will laugh at it and see through it. It will also reveal other beliefs that are hidden around that one thought
There are different techniques. You can try them but it's better not to mix them at the same session. One mentioned in the Castaneda books is to listen to the external sounds. And from there, the book The Power of Now mentions to listen to the silence. Also when it's quiet, you may hear internal sounds, like a high pitched one.
Another method I read is to sense the body. Another to follow your breathing, and in Taisha Abelar book, her teacher tells her to breath with the lower abdomen, not moving the chest, to focus the energy away from the mind.
Lastly, as a temporary last resource for difficult moments when the mind goes wild, you could just let it run for a while but distance yourself from it gently by observing it; you just watch it and listen to its sound.
Thank you! this is very helpful, to not mix techniques, I tended to go from one to the other :)
Hey, what is the significance of the high pitched tone? I never paid any attention to its significance as I thought it was happening due to me being tired or due to illness at points, but sometimes in darkroom I will hear a high pitched whine a bit similar to tinnitis but louder as it hurts my ears and seems "deeper" in the body.
I don't think there's any "significance" to it; it's just one of many options or tools to focus the attention away from chatting. It seems to be a natural sound that's always there but gets obscured by external noise and by inner chatter. We can hear it more clearly when silent. To be honest sometimes it hurts me to use it, so I still use it but not as much or for a shorter time. I prefer to focus on the external distant sounds, brings me calm. But I will still hear the high pitch as a result of silence, I just try not to focus to hard on it or it becomes too loud and unbearable, but that's just me. Do what works best, you have to explore and be willing to make adjustments as you go.
Thanks, I was wondering if it was some tone that maybe is heard once the ap starts to move, oh well lol.
I noticed 2 different high pitch sounds. One, the more common, is always there in the background and you can focus on it easily even if there's outside noise; this is the one that hurts me like tinitus, it's more hissing and unrefined, and loud. The other one, is a much more quiet, delicate one. It's more like a "u" faint sound, and it's rare. I only hear it when I'm deep in inner silence, or naturally in some cases, in a quiet isolated room, when using ANC headphones, under water, etc. Also I'm dreaming. I believe that's the sound that can be even healing. That one I really don't know how to summon, but this conversation is very helpful as I will be exploring more the difference and to not confuse those two sounds; or maybe it's irrelevant and I'm chasing rainbows!! 🤣
I will also look for them in future and try to report back, lol
I wonder if someone here can add to this and has experimented with a technique I've read about: to just ignore the inner dialogue. And how it contrasts with the opposite technique of watching the thoughts. This seems contradictory but may induce silence at times, I'm just not sure if they're equally useful, just wondering if more experienced people know anything about this

Here something that I put together a few days ago for the Overview of the Practices page from various sections of Castaneda’s Silent Knowledge publication. With some very slight paraphrasing and editing:
"Don Juan further explained that the sorcerers who lived in Mexico in ancient times, and who established his lineage, were capable of reaching silent knowledge after entering its matrix: inner silence. He said that inner silence was an accomplishment of such tremendous importance for them that they set it up as the essential condition of sorcery.
Don Juan put such emphasis on silent knowledge that I coveted it. I wanted to get right away to inner silence. I felt that I didn't have a moment to lose. When I asked don Juan to give me a succinct explanation of the procedures involved, he laughed at me.
"To venture into the world of sorcerers," he said, "is not like learning to drive a car. To drive a car, you need manuals and instructions. To enter into inner silence, you need to intend it.
"But how can I intend it?" I insisted.
"The only way you could intend it is by intending it," he declared.
One of the most difficult things for a man of our day to accept is the lack of procedure. Modern man seems to be in the throes of manuals, praxes, methods, steps leading to. Modern man is ceaselessly taking notes, making diagrams, deeply involved in the "know-how." But in the world of sorcerers, don Juan said, procedures and rituals are mere designs to attract and focus attention. They are devices used to force a focusing of interest and determination. They have no other value.
"To accomplish any feat in sorcery, there cannot be procedures, or steps to be followed, but one single abstract act that defines it all: the act, of pragmatically reinforcing our link with the force that permeates the universe, a force which sorcerers call intent. Since we are alive and conscious, we are already intimately related to intent. What we need, sorcerers say, is to make that link the realm of our conscious acts, and that act of becoming conscious of our link with intent is another way of defining silent knowledge."
Don Juan taught that inner silence must be gained by a consistent pressure of discipline. He said that it has to be accrued, or that it has to be stored, bit by bit, second by second. In other words, one has to force oneself to be silent, if it is only for a few seconds. Don Juan stated that if one is persistent, persistence overcomes habit, and thus, one arrives at a threshold of accrued seconds or minutes, a threshold which varies from person to person. If, for instance, the threshold of inner silence is for any given individual, ten minutes, once this mark is reached, inner silence happens by itself, by its own accord, so to speak."
And something new for the main Silence Wiki Page, also from Castaneda's Silent Knowledge publication (a sorcery primer), slightly paraphrased and edited:
"I can tell you that it is true that every time we execute a magical pass, we are, indeed, altering the basic structures of our beings. We are putting a dam on a flow that we were taught to take as an inalterable string of things."
In a faltering voice that didn't seem to be mine, I asked don Juan to give me an example of blocking off the flow he was talking about. I told him that I wanted to visualize it in my mind.
"In your mind? You had better learn to call things by their name. What you call your mind is not your mind. Sorcerers are convinced that our minds are extraneous things that have been put on each one of us. Accept it, without any further explanation at this moment about who or what put it on us, or how it was put there."
I had another wave of the same threatening sensation as before. I felt it this time more clearly. The wave didn't stem from me, yet it was attached to me. Don Juan was doing something, to me mysteriously positive and terribly threatening at the same time. I sensed it as an attempt to cut a thin film that seemed to be glued to me. His eyes were fixed on mine with an unblinking stare.
He moved his eyes away and began to talk without looking at me anymore. "I'll give you an example," he said. "For instance, I should be prey to the conditions common to old age. If I went to see a doctor, upon seeing me, he would assume that I must be an old Indian, plagued with uncertainties, frustrations and bad diet, all of this, naturally, resulting in the expected and predictable ailments of senility."
"I don't have any such problems not because I am stronger than the average man or because of my genetic frame, but because my magical passes have made my body break through any patterns of reaction and thoughts that result in those ailments. I can truthfully say that every time I crack my joints, following the execution of a magical pass, I am blocking off the flow of expectations and behavior that ordinarily cause such conditions..."
...It was annoying to have to admit that even though don Juan was old enough to be my grandfather, in comparison, I was stiff, opinionated, and repetitious.
Senile.
He, on the other hand, was fresh, inventive, agile, resourceful; in short, he possessed something which, although I was young, I did not: youth. He delighted in telling me repeatedly that being young was not in any way a deterrent to senility.
Following a burst of energy that seemed to explode inside me, I openly admitted my chagrin. "How is it possible, don Juan," I said, "that you could be more youthful than I?”
"I have vanquished my mind." he said, opening his eyes wide to denote bewilderment. "I don't have a mind to tell me that it is time to be old. I don't honor agreements in which I didn't participate. Remember this: it is not merely a slogan for sorcerers to say that they do not honor agreements in which they did not participate; and that to be plagued by old age is but one such agreement.”
Perform Tensgrity during a dark room, not before. It is also worth trying the stones of silence, they help well.
I am pretty ignorant and new to this work. Something that has helped me silence the inner dialogue is meditation — to focus on my breath and then when I notice that I am distracted by my mind, to label it all “thinking” — a nice, generic, neutral label—no matter the tone or texture of the dialogue, and to come back to the breath, over and over…disrupting the thought cycles without judgment.
Also I have seen this idea of ‘intending’ come up in The Art of Dreaming, can anyone help me understand the deeper meaning of it? I was thinking maybe it has something to do with dropping the limitations of language?

thank you! this looks like an amazing resource!

Anam has this in his early videos. Awareness and the hunt for a sense of self-importance! this leads to a stop in dialogue! if you really do it every day!! then the term is from three years and up! (Castaneda 4 years. me too)

Hey, I was wondering, in one of Anaam's early videos, he mentions "people start thinking they are going to see some magic with their eyes" and makes fun of it. That seems downright laughable to me, so I was wondering what your thoughts are on Anaam after trying darkroom.
My friend, the dark room is just a part of magic! More precisely, an exercise for the development of the energy body. If the goal is to become a person of knowledge, to receive direct communication and signs of the Spirit, then the full path (described by Castaneda) cannot be avoided!
A few years ago I thought exactly the same as YOU. Deep understanding of everything that Carlos described comes with the growth of awareness! And what is most amazing is that YOU YOURSELF suddenly become DIFFERENT! No pity, life in the moment, impeccability, no judgment of others (they have their own path!), absolute calm - I simply became exactly as Castaneda described. You won't achieve this by waving your hands in the dark. By the way - I suggest an experiment. Just try any CONSCIOUS movements (not passes!) in a dark room. The result will be the same! Karlos came up with a simple and brilliant idea. Passes for body movement (the energetic body needs it) and their complexity and change is for... AWARENESS!
I hope Google translated everything correctly.
P.S. 1. Tensegrity. 2. Recapitulation. 3. Non-doing. 4. Petty (domestic) tyrants. 5. Technique of gazing. 6. Total (inner) silence. 7. Total discipline and impeccability of action. 8. Dreaming. 9. Stalking. (Note: the methods are listed in order of increasing awareness. This is necessary in order to properly master each of them. The last two methods - dreaming and stalking - are quite sophisticated and require that the level of awareness (energetic glow) rise at least above the ankles before practicing them.)

How do you define stalking since it is how you lost your human form? Because the books give a clear definition of stalking, which I follow, and I don't think Anaam does.
Start catching certain thoughts. It would be great if these were thoughts related to a sense of self-importance. Start watching your breathing. Your face, etc. Awareness will grow. It grows very slowly and in leaps and bounds. (levels) First, you will "split" into two. From this level, you can already observe thoughts. The next level is the loss of human form. Then the level is absolute silence. You turn on/off the internal dialogue yourself. I haven't gotten further yet :o) This is very hard work. At first, I advise using a timer. Signal - you remembered about the task, etc.

"The art of stalking," he continued, "as I have already said, deals with the fixation of the assemblage point. The old sorcerers discovered, through practice, that important as it is to displace the assemblage point, it is even more important to make it stay fixed on its new position, wherever that new position might be."
I see colors flowing around me nearly all day, like purple fog. That is maintaining my assemblage point in a fixed position.
There are others (much better than me) who can maintain their assemblage point while being out in the world in the red zone, which should be easy for you to do as well, since you have apparently lost your human form. Go into the shift below and start walking in the world, if you can't, it's just excuses on your part (since you are a stalker).
That is why it is downright laughable for Anaam to say that you won't see stuff, it is just clownish behavior on his part. You did well to see the purple cloud in darkroom, never doubt it, but Dan is around your age, and if you can't do what he does with eyes open, can you really say that you have put enough effort in?
Since you like Anaam, I've "left everything better than I found it" by telling you not to write off that everything in the books is real, every magical sight is possible in sorcery, without the use of drugs.
There is a simple exercise I do. I watch a 30 second countdown on my phone. I count along with the voice in my head but I only voice the even numbers. So you only have to hold your mind silent for one second at a time. You get many moments of experiencing what it feels like to successfully restrain yourself from using the voice in your head.
It is a simple task but I find it engaging enough and short enough for my mind not to get distracted too much. My hope is that it is exercising the same muscles required to hold the mind quiet. I haven't been doing it long enough to say it is definitely beneficial though. I set a reminder to do it once every hour and try to silence my mind between sessions also. I do feel that I am improving at quieting my mind but still have a long way to go.
