I will tell you about my experience of growing awareness. Maybe it will help someone get their bearings. I copied Castaneda's quote because I have not experienced any other way of determining the level/changes of awareness/attention. Just as it was said above, something inside just knows and that's it!
The first "level" is an ordinary person.
The second "level" is "split". There appears the one who is always present and SILENTLY observes everything, and the one who chatters incessantly, the one who gets offended, gets angry...
The third "level", the loss of human form. Life "here and now" begins. The past and future "cease" to exist (you practically do not remember them) and play any role. Which can happen through darkroom practice, because you got rid of your internal dialogue and sustained that long enough for your assemblage point to move very far. You also have your energy body merged with you, from the Tensegrity.
However, your assemblage point moves so far that you can't remember what you just saw, after a mere 30 seconds.
That's the nature of sorcery. We only remember things reliably, because we fit them into a timeline of our daily life.
When you're off in other realities, your timeline doesn't extend there. Even if you remember that you started practicing, and which tensegrity forms you did, that doesn't constitute a timeline you can use, to retrieve a memory.
You need an "index" to look up that information in your memory database.
So it's really tough to keep all the progress you make, daily.
That's why the thumbs up technique exists. If you can't remember the cool magic itself, at least you can remember that you felt good about the progress that represented.
But over time, you build up a new "second attention timeline" of sorts, and can recall more and more.
The attack of the fliers, trying to stop us from making the kind of progress that will interfere with their ability to steal energy from modern people, is designed to stir up your internal dialogue, cast doubt on your activities, and in general erase all traces of what you witnessed or did the day before.

Maybe one of your supernatural visitors comes by again, and you've seen her a dozen times in the past.
The "attack of threes" is not actually 100% effective, and thus we have a small chance. Which grows larger with more of your awareness, stored consciously in the realm of "seeing".
We seem to have gotten this current attack, because I was looking at how to fine tune my assemblage point position, a topic Carlos started to explain, but he saw that his audience had stopped paying attention to his J curve lecture.
We also had a discussion going on in advanced chats, about something we might do as a group to make shared dreaming easier.
I suppose I should assume this attack indicates that was a good idea, even if it's outlandish.
So first we saw the angry zen guy who couldn't see what he'd stumbled onto, and wanted us all to just respect other people's beliefs. Rather than help him learn.
He only wanted praise. Not to be corrected and put on the right path.
It didn't seem to matter to him at all, that this subreddit is unique on all of the internet and has details instructions and picture for how to make it work. And has dozens succeeding!
There's nowhere else like that. But he wasn't interested in actually learning. He just saw any attempts to help him, as intolerance.
Then some spanish speaking guy showed up in chat, claiming his girlfriend is active in the women's subreddit.
He was a "first 3 book" kind of guy, and just like those always do, was indignant when it was suggested he hadn't read more than a few of the books, and had fixated on the "Man of Knowledge" attention seeking fantasy.

He seemed hurt about the Zen guy, implying there was some connection there.
Zen guys are some of the worst of all!
He got so angry, he decided to pretend to be an authority by claiming he'd met Carlos in the desert the other day. And Carlos had told him I was a liar, or some such thing.
Now this. A 100% pretender, dancing in his underwear.
Saying the most harmful things possible, to confuse beginners and take away their only chance to actually learn. Encouraging them to pretend instead.
Seems orchestrated to me!
