Sure, they cheated with the DMT, but the principle is relatively sound (and their eyes are open); despite their conclusions, being based on such a small window of direct experience.
The laser light is equivalent to the light balancing effects that are observed while in darkroom, and in this context, is used as the element to awaken the dreaming attention to assemble a different "world."
Like we are assembling this one, right now. As long as the internal dialogue is dialed back enough to allow that.
Just wish they were more aware that they don't need the artificial DMT. Just silence and darkness, which is a direct way to increase our own endogenous DMT, a molecule that is already present in the human brain and modulates our neurotransmitter systems (despite not, technically, being a neurotransmitter itself).

Don Juan probably wouldn't bother attempting to explain it, and instead create a best case learning scenario to maximize it.
Carlos? Ask Dan that one...
I'm thinking that sunlight glitter gazing actually increases our free floating serotonin levels, and thus aids in the metabolic cycle towards DMT as long as darkness is maintained.
Light exposure disrupts conversion into melatonin, and it takes more time in darkness for pinoline and then DMT to be metabilized, or rather methylated from the prior tryptamines (serotonin and melatonin are organic tryptamines).
The enzyme indolethylamine N-methyltransferase (INMT) is responsible for the methylation of other tryptamine compounds in the brain and other tissues.
INMT can convert tryptamine into N-methyltryptamine (NMT) and then into N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) through successive methylation steps
INMT is also involved in the metabolism of pinoline (6-methoxy-tetrahydro-beta-carboline), but its precise role in all endogenous tryptamine pathways, and their physiological function in the brain, remains an active area of research.
These methylation processes are crucial for the regulation of neurotransmitters and neurohormones, impacting various functions including circadian rhythms, mood, and potentially even consciousness itself.

Tryptophan is the molecular base from which tryptamines are metabolized. So turkey, etc.
From my notes: 5-HTP (L-Tryptophan), Methionine (an amino acid), B6, B9 (folic acid), B12.
Tryptophan is part of the reason you get so sleepy after eating a big Thanksgiving dinner, and then go to the living room or whatever where it's usually a bit darker and the body gets primed into melatonin conversion.
For full disclosure, the addition of an MAOI (or if you are taking an anti-depressant) is what can POTENTIALLY lead to serotonin shock syndrome. It prevents DMT from being broken down by the body in short order.
Which is why DMT trips only last minutes, without an MAOI like Moclobemide, Syrian Rue (Harmaline), or Yage (Harmine).
On an MAOI it can last hours 😳.
If you're on an MAOI there's an extensive list of foods to avoid because they can lead to the overproduction of tryptamines, and potentially cause serotonin shock syndrome.
Which can be fatal. 💀
Necessitating prompt intervention with a serotonin antagonist like Cyproheptadine combined with Benzodiazepine for muscle rigidity and seizures.
So stay the f*ck away from MAOI's if you try to load up with too much tryptophan!!!

It's a mainstream theory that we might (but haven't proven any of it yet):
1) Live in a simulation being run on alien supercomputers.
or
2) Live as reflections on the surface of a black hole, which have quantum information content only and no actual substance as we know it.
But that DMT study seems to me, to 100% miss the most likely explanation for all of this.
And by giving people drugs and some idea of what they're trying to investigate, it's really just a complicated "evil clown" experiment.
Last night I got to see what an "upgrade" is.
Carol Tiggs mentioned those, when someone was asking her about the death defier living inside her.
I suspect only women can do that, because it takes a womb to hold the awareness of an old seer who has lost his physical body.
But apparently men can still get an upgrade.
I saw two last night.
Basically they're replacements of the main "theme" in our awareness. Of "us" as a structure interpreting and interacting to the world.

[-]

We don't know anything about it as far as I know. I'll see if Gemini can find anything.
Gemini: The word upgrades never comes up in the books.
Gemini on lecture notes: No mention of upgrades in there either.
So I suppose it's good this came up on reddit. because Carol did indeed say that you get offered upgrades on the path of sorcery.
I asked Gemini to look for the death defier going inside Carol, anywhere in the lecture notes, and it said:
***
According to these sources, the following details pertain to this encounter:
The Meeting in Tula: Carol Tiggs recounted meeting the death defier in a small chapel in Tula, Mexico. She described the entity as a sorcerer from an ancient lineage (approximately 7,000 years old) who had escaped death and entrapment in the inorganic beings' world by changing into a woman. +2
The Energetic Merger: During this encounter, which Carol described as "dreaming inside a dream," the death defier made a pact with her. Carol stated that the death defier "merged" with her, essentially catching a ride "piggy-back". As a result, Carol became a "cyclic being" with the death defier.
Physical and Energetic Effects: Upon her return to the ordinary world in 1983, Carol reportedly possessed "the death defier's energy". This merger granted her what she called a "sorcerer's eye" (specifically her left eye), which she used to "zap" or "stop" people by momentarily suspending their internal dialogue. +2
The "Upgrade" Context: While the word "upgrades" is used in a modern context in a 2015 seminar report to describe Russian practitioners improving their "software upgrades" for Tensegrity sites, the term is not used to describe the death defier merger. Instead, Carol and others referred to this state as being "double charged" or reaching a "new vibratory level". +1
Carol's Status: The notes specify that Carol Tiggs is no longer sure if she is the original Carol Tiggs, a version possessed by the death defier, or a "weird amalgamation of the two". Carlos Castaneda reportedly referred to her after this return as his "little freak of nature"
***
I can only add that they aren't like anything I could possibly describe properly.
Essentially, you "notice" that you no longer have to be "you", and could view reality from a completely different point of view.
Alien to anything that would ever have occurred to you.
And likely completely free from internal dialogue.
It's just gone, perhaps permanently.
Which isn't as impossible as it sounds.
We only got our internal dialogue by taking a birth in a human body, and then it was "hazed" into us by our family.
It's unnatural and only came about on this world, in the last 10,000 years.
Since language is at least 50,000 words, that's not the cause of the internal dialogue.
However, it's possible that last night I saw 2 different topics.
One of what it's like to lose the human form.
And then one of what you might choose to do, once you lost it.
Namely. merge with some other being that needs a new home.

The assemblage point. DMT just moves it.
So does meditation, praying, and it especially moves when you sleep.
The hallucinations in dreams are every bit as real as DMT!
It's just that we don't have our Tonal rationality in there, to be amazed at what we're seeing.
The dreamer doesn't care. It has DMT like experiences every single day.

I think it would be impossible to conceptualize the assemblage point without sorcery experience. It probably required a lot of effort to develop this understanding.
I think it’s either very hard or even impossible to come up with an analogy that is equivalent to what the assemblage point is, outside of the “cognition of the sorcerers of ancient Mexico”. But I’d love to read or hear about one.

It took at the very least hundreds of years to discover it, once the 8000 year ago drug using sorcerers learned to "see", and dumped the drugs.
At least, don Juan gave that impression without any precise dates
He also said that no other group is aware of it.
Which you can see for yourself by looking around.
Of course, they will be now so likely we'll see "ancient Buddhist writings" about it. Or crazy Yogis giving youtube lectures about how they knew that all along.
I'm waiting for it to show up in Star Wars...

Understanding is only a cope:
"You don't think I understand, do you?" I asked compulsively.
"I suppose you do... you do, in fact. You do understand that Genaro was behind you all the time. However, understanding is not the real point"
His statement that don Genaro had been behind me all the time was shocking to me. I begged him to explain it.
"Your mind is set to seek only one side of this," he said.
He took a dry twig and moved it in the air. He was not drawing in the air or making a figure; what he did resembled the movements he makes with his fingers when he cleans the debris from a pile of seeds. His movements were like a soft prodding or scratching the air with the twig.
He turned and looked at me and I shrugged my shoulders automatically in a gesture of bafflement. He drew closer and repeated his movements, making eight points on the ground. He circled the first point.
"You are here," he said. "We are all here; this is feeling, and we move from here to here."
He circled the second, which he had drawn right above number one. He then moved his twig back and forth between the two points to portray a heavy traffic.
"There are, however, six more points a man is capable of handling," he said. "Most men know nothing about them."
He placed his twig between points one and two and pecked on the ground with it.
"To move between these two points you call understanding. You've been doing that all your life. If you say you understand my knowledge, you have done nothing new."
He then joined some of the eight points to the others with lines; the result was a long trapezoid figure that had eight centers of uneven radiation.
"Each of these six remaining points is a world, just like feeling and understanding are two worlds for you," he said.
"Why eight points? Why not an infinite number, as in a circle?" I asked.
I drew a circle on the ground. Don Juan smiled.
"As far as I know there are only eight points a man is capable of handling. Perhaps men cannot go beyond that. And I said handling, not understanding, did you get that?"

Darkroom teaches how the assemblage point works, and you learn from direct experience over a very long time (it's a long ways to silent knowledge).
But you'll never "understand it" because our point of view is like an ant's point of view.
Can an ant understand that there's lizards who live off the ant colonies along the fence area of my business park?
Not a chance.
I can easily see that from my view walking along the fence for exercise, but all the ant knows is, it doesn't like it when it's friends are snatched away and give off a danger scent.
Can you profit from magic and still learn it?
I think it's unlikely you'd want to, assuming you actually got to the point where it wasn't "immoral" to be pretending to do something you didn't actually learn yet.
In order to actually learn our sorcery, you have to be transformed.
Far past greed, for example.
