The first recommendations of the practice of stopping internal dialogue

Hello to the whole community. I've read all of Castaneda's books, but I still haven't figured out the specific practices for stopping internal dialogue. Please tell me where to start the practice, how should I practice it during the day?

Hey, fellow warrior! Try to look at your hands while dreaming. Just raise them to eye level and take a good look at them. Think about this before falling asleep. Get some melatonin to induce lucid dreaming. I would also recommend you drink the tea of the herb Calea zacatechichi, the dream herb, before falling asleep without any sugar!

And here, another major technique, which I practice 4 or 5 times per week, but I run barefoot:

"At the beginning of our association, Don Juan had delineated another procedure: walking for long stretches without focusing the eyes on anything. His recommendation had been to not look at anything directly but, by slightly crossing the eyes, to keep a peripheral view of everything that presented itself to the eyes. He had insisted, although I had not understood at the time, that if one kept one's unfocused eyes at a point just above the horizon, it was possible to notice, at once, everything in almost the total 180-degree range in front of one's eyes. He had assured me that that exercise was the only way of shutting off the internal dialogue." (Tales of Power)

And about running barefoot, shod runners predominantly heel-strike, which is a result of the foot colliding with the ground ahead of the body’s centre of mass. This angle of impact sends braking forces back into the body, which the runner must then work hard to overcome to continue his or her forward momentum:

Contrastingly, barefoot runners tend to strike the ground with the forefoot directly underneath their centre of mass. This angle of impact allows for the vertical forces to be converted into rotational forces, helping propel the runner forward:

The secret is to think all your thoughts in the first person. Because
Don Juan instructed us to stop the inner dialogue. Nowhere was it written that we can't have an inner monologue 😏

The stated purpose of this subreddit is to aid in restoring the reputation of Carlos Castaneda and the knowledge he imparted, by pragmatically applying that knowledge IN PRACTICE. This means that we are sticking to what really works, as proven by direct experience by long-practicing members. We need to make clear our intent to move away, as a community, from the mistakes others have made. Content that is at-odds with this purpose will, upon review, be removed.

I just sincerely hope that you get an actual answer that does NOT include;

-being in a darkroom
-meditating with a stick
-walking with your palms wide open towards the earth
-use of any substances whatsoever
-meditating with some stones between your fingers
-“forcing” silence (whatever that means)

I do hope that someone mentions actually applicable, detailed method step by step which can be used in one’s day to day life… say when you have a break from your work in an office.

Instructions are kind of obscure because it's not really something you do: it's something you stop doing. Like no longer scratching an itch.

Also there's the risk of sounding new-agey and meditation-y. Using terminology not strictly in alignment with the intent of the sorcerors of ancient Mexico and such.

I will give it a whirl, though.

It's an intense awareness of the physical body and present moment which which almost repels or pushes out rogue thoughts from entering the mind space. Inner silence is both the result of this as well as the cause. Because ultimately, your awareness "is" silence. The space is which perception arises.

Trying to stop it from the level of the mind is futile. A deeper consciousness needs to take the helm.

I tend to think the most when I go for long walks or it might be that I just become more aware of my (?) thoughts…

[-]
u/isthisasobot 1 points 2026-07-29 13:23

It's also a matter of intending. Just as we learn to talk to ourselves we also can learn * not * to do that. No endless prodecures necessary. And it's not just going for a long walk. Don Juan describes most elegantly what " the proper way of walking" entails. Why discard this instruction?

[-]
u/TheDonGenaro 1 points 2026-07-29 14:21

You mean walking while having your attention on the horizon and having your eyes wide open so as to burden the tonal - that is, to overwhelm it with…?

[-]
u/isthisasobot 1 points 2026-07-29 14:47

To avoid further confusion I quoted the passage where don Juan describes the prodecure.

[-]
u/TheDonGenaro 1 points 2026-07-29 15:02

Where did you quote it?

I have a theory- that people prefer audio books to reading because they are used to being read to as a baby. Just a theory. And a reminder that we are not talking about a fairy tale or lullaby.

[-]
u/TheDonGenaro 1 points 2026-07-29 12:09

This reminds me of the teachings of G. I. Gurdjieff! It’s basically what he is talking about…

But how does one make that freaking parasite to stop talking?! I have had numerous instances wgere the monologue just keeps shitting on his own and I couldn’t stop it whatsoever. The worse scenarios are when I am dead tired and can’t fall asleep because he keeps yapping about irrelevant nonsense. He also likes to repeat himself, constantly.

Some research on the practice of "self-remembering" may help

[-]
u/TheDonGenaro 1 points 2026-07-30 06:52

How is it that you are familiar with it?

[-]
u/polyphaze 1 points 2026-07-30 13:41

There's a lot of crossover between Gurdjieff and Castaneda.

[-]
u/TheDonGenaro 1 points 2026-07-30 15:44

I also noticed that. He also teached some movements which could be an equivalent to tensegrity.

Do you have any suggestions on where to find more applicable advice from Gurdjieff?

read all this + all the hyperlinks in the text https://www.reddit.com/r/castaneda/wiki/silence

you'll have a pretty good idea of when to start then

[-]
u/awarENTP 0 points 2026-07-29 02:24

You stop trying to stop the internal dialogue that’s the first step.

You stop trying to change physical things and physical situations and circumstances, and you just recognize it all as perfect .

Then you can being awakening.

Play around with your thoughts, observe them, and duplicate the same thought over and over again, for example. By doing this, get a sense of what thoughts feel like, and then you’ll be able to stop the continuous flow of thoughts. This is about concentration, not meditation. Practice this state of mental silence until your body senses that thoughts are thieves of your attention. Once you’ve developed this awareness, you’ll achieve results in a matter of seconds. As you'll find out, there isn't just the one kind of inner silence, but rather different levels of it. Exploring ever deeper levels is a lifelong task.

[-]
u/isthisasobot 0 points 2026-07-29 07:21

" Duplicate the same thought over and over again" is about the worst advice I've read on this sub so far. It isn't the first time it was given either. I was waiting to point out this " scratch on the record".
So far, after many years of this- it seems that there is enough advice and instructions in the books... people making up their own instructions which are often crude, miss the point... or is just an attempt to rebrand what they have read for whatever( sinister) reason.
Where in the books does don Juan give advice anywhere remotely near to what you are giving. He's asking where to start, after having read the books. I presume you have also read all of the books? So is the advice still " play with your thoughts"?

[-]
u/tabdrops 1 points 2026-07-29 07:40

That's just the whining of someone who has no idea about a practical approach. The point is, as it's easy to read, that the body gets a feeling or response. To turn the dealing with thoughts into body knowledge. It's comparable to visual feedback during darkroom.

How do you expect to stop your thoughts if your awareness doesn't know the hook to insert itself into the flow of thoughts? It's forced by a non-doing. Anything that interrupts the usual flow of thoughts is a non-doing. This includes duplicating thoughts as well.

[-]
u/isthisasobot 1 points 2026-07-29 08:22

How you do it is personal, just like if you have your own versions of Tensegrity- just don't teach it to others. The books have the practical approach, I put some quotes in the comments. They are as practical as it gets. So where is the whining coming from? Are you sure that you are giving a better practical approach than don Juan did? Maybe replace one of those blahs with a beep

The Wheel of Time
Commentary on The Second Ring of Power

In the corpus of The Second Ring of Power, that struggle of the apprentices is more than manifest. Don Juan's other apprentices were a lost lot, filled with egomaniacal outbursts, each one pulling in his own direction, each one asserting his or her value.

Exactly the kind of thing that would make an inventory warrior's head explode.

[-]
u/isthisasobot 1 points 2026-07-29 08:54

Inventory warrior.. the name says it already. Is there any reference to that in the books or anywhere for that matter? Or is it a new idea, like someone just wanted to coin that name. What kind of thing " exactly" do you mean would make an " inventory warrior"( assuming that's a thing) have his head explode?

You need to lose your self importance. It's very clear based on your emotional responses that you aren't actually stopping your internal dialogue.

[-]
u/isthisasobot 1 points 2026-07-29 22:01

You're absolutely right! Thank you so much for pointing that out!

[-]
u/Werejaguare 1 points 2026-07-29 15:52

Tabdrops, maybe I'm just in a mood or place for your suggested method, but I think it's brilliant. It's exactly what I need right now! Thank you!

[-]
u/TheDonGenaro 1 points 2026-07-29 18:51

I am confused, does this knowledge originate from the lineage or is it external? I have never seen it in the books.

[-]
u/tabdrops 1 points 2026-07-29 20:28

Most knowledge isn't found in the books. Through sincere practice, one would come across it sooner or later anyway. Just as, in the second attention, one can see thoughts as strings or streams of dreams, a bit like a movie on videotape playing on a screen. In the context of inner silence, one could therefore describe thoughts as annoying advertisements.

Is the question of whether it comes from the lineage actually decisive if something could be seen in the second attention? Or would it be much more revealing to ask why Carlos' obvious fanbase hasn't gained such knowledge on its own since then?

[-]
u/TheDonGenaro 1 points 2026-07-30 06:51

I haven’t seen reached that point of development yet and can’t see streams in second attention…

[-]
u/DarkSaturnPrince 1 points 2026-07-29 20:21

Cool trick. Will try this. Thanks for sharing.

[-]
u/Werejaguare 1 points 2026-07-31 18:16

Tabdrops, Ive been enjoying playing around with thoughts so much that I looked up your previous posts and comments. You recommended Mylar space blankets for daytime gazers to get glitter energy from the sun.

Mine came today. (Amazon). WOW!!

[-]
u/isthisasobot 1 points 2026-08-01 08:09

Where, where, brilliant stair?
Lost- forever idiocy.

[-]
u/Werejaguare 1 points 2026-08-01 16:16

> I wonder how many people are gonna look for " survival blanket" on amazon now, probably not that many more.. uhu, good sign. How about checking out the rooftops of houses, here in the nl many of them have these spinning wind things, probably to serve no other purpose than to attract attention... whatever, it, works.. but to what purpose.. well.. as a map I guess.. unconsciously or whatever.. but c'mon folks, we can do better than survival blankets can't we?<

This is a comment of yours FROM THREE YEARS AGO.

In response to a post of Tabdrops on shimmering surfaces.

It has the same feeling (nasty) as your current comments.

Do you have a thing for Tabdrops?

Don't respond. Save your energy. You need it to move on. Or away.

Better yet, start noticing feelings associated with things. Starting with thoughts

Don't respond

Carlos started with the right way of walking. At the time, when he first introduced him to this technique don Juan said it was the only sure way to accomplish that.

[-]
u/TheDonGenaro 1 points 2026-07-29 18:45

Isn’t the peripheral glancing reserved for dreaming, that is practicing to stay lucid?

[-]
u/isthisasobot 1 points 2026-07-29 19:09

Could you point out where it says that?

[-]
u/TheDonGenaro 1 points 2026-07-30 06:56

I just remember it that way. Perhaps in the art of dreaming?

[-]
u/isthisasobot 1 points 2026-07-30 15:30

No..maybe an idea to go back and read all the books again if you haven't done so already.
It seems like you are one of those who just flick through the pages and claim their some special sorcerer who doesn't have to make any effort. That others will do so for you.
It's obvious what's corrupting all this, the practices are brilliantly and elegantly described in the books and people put them down and forget whatever they think they have learned.
Op is not even bothering to react to any of the answers, whereas the answers were clear in the books he claims to have read.
What a waste of energy to have to repeat over and over again things to people who should know better.

You could try the "Chair Silence" technique, in the "Simple Silence" techniques post. I think it might be available in the wiki.

Basically, sit in a chair with your eyes closed and force all words from your mind, until your nose bleeds. Not a single word is allowed!

If you really do that, a bunch of fun magical things will happen. Those are listed in the post on this technique.

[-]
u/glamourpet 1 points 2026-07-29 23:56

It took me 24 years to figure it out and I was trying daily. So, I am someone with a difficult brain I guess, but I never found any of CC methods to be good enough and remain hugely cynical of "silence in 3 months" of practise without going into a retreat. If you go into a retreat (i.e. work at it daily all day every day in focused silence until you get it) then 3 days you can achieve silence and 7 maybe grab brief moments.

but I believe inner silence to really master is like any learning that takes 4 years at college and then a long time in the work place. Meditation in 15 mins every day is a myth. I also shared my journey to it and the method I think is the only way to really get somewhere that I ever found was Vipassana. After that, once you know what actually "stopping" the Mind means, then you can find ways to achieve it while functioning in Modernity. I share my journey to it here.

The first and most important thing to do is to realize that the internal dialogue isn't yours. This is the most important step. As soon as a person realizes this, they start fighting it. In reality, you shouldn't fight it, precisely because it isn't yours. What you should do is stop it. This means constantly watching your thoughts and, to begin with, filtering them out — not acting on their instructions.

Start simple: don't do what that voice in your head tells you. For example, it says: "you're so tired, you should take a day off today and eat lots of candy." You listen to this nonsense and decide not to do it. Or it says: "wear the white t-shirt," and you deliberately put on the green one instead. That's when you'll understand what you're dealing with, and a real war will begin. Basically, you're developing your own strategic life direction and not letting yourself be controlled — this is a form of not-doing.

Stalking is the art of tracking and taming your own automatic reactions, habits, and internal dialogue, without letting them control you.

Yes, the connection is direct, but more precisely: stalking isn't the method of stopping the dialogue itself — it's more like the ground on which stopping it becomes possible.

The internal dialogue is sustained by your automatisms — habitual reactions, self-importance, self-pity, expectations. As long as you don't stalk these reactions in yourself, the dialogue will keep switching back on, because it has something to hold onto.

So stopping the dialogue doesn't happen from stalking on its own — it's a side effect: the more you tame your automatic reactions through stalking, the less "fuel" the internal dialogue has, and the easier it becomes to stop it using other techniques (walking, mindful actions, etc.).

You can also use any of the methods described here — the main thing is to realize what you're dealing with. I've tried them all.

What also helped me a lot was doing everything mindfully. For example, I'm walking down the street — and during this process I only allow myself to think about the road, about what I see around me, or nothing at all. If other thoughts pop up, like "then we'll watch a movie" or something else — you bring yourself back to the road. Basically, do this with everything — with any everyday activity: cooking, cleaning, brushing your teeth.

Then, throughout this whole process, your will starts to develop — specifically your intention and determination to stop it at some point. The main thing is not to stop trying. Good luck!
