Carlos found whoever taught him by visiting Morongo Indian Reservation, introduced to people there by Joanie. He met Ruby and John.
Ruby was a "pul", meaning she had an inorganic being helper.
She has a book available on Amazon, which mentions Carlos and Don Juan.
She drank tea made from the leaves. I used to sit around a campfire and listen to her stories.
I suspect she never learned to summon her helper without the aid of the tea. As far as I know, she never advanced past ordinary lucid dreaming.
The plant is a dead end. You can't substitute for hard work.
However, in people with very stubborn internal dialogues, it can loosen things up a bit.
It introduces doubts about the solidity of reality.
If you've ever run into stubborn "scientific" type of person, you know how rigidly they can cling to their causality view of reality.
And you can't try to explain. They'll look you in the eyes and tell you to your face, you're lying.

Interesting comment thanks. Can I check are you saying Carlos found who taught ‘Don Juan,’ by visiting the reservation or found who taught himself there?
You don’t have the name of Ruby’s book? I wonder if she talks about The Devils Weed in it.
Was she ever outwardly effected the plant round the campfire?
I’d hate to look at the use of the plants as a substitute for hard work and would never do so, only as an aid. I’m sure I can be stubborn at times as we all can be so calling in a plant helper your experienced with maybe 2/3 times a year, maybe on equinox or solstice I don’t think is too futile a pursuit. Im most familiar with LSA in the form of woodrose or morning glory seeds. It’s always extremely kind to me, refocusing my mind and will if lost and giving my posture, gut, general health and emotional state a once over.
Datura is a different type of woman entirely, I’ve read about everything on it online but still don’t think I’ve ever found a safe way to ingest besides simply eating seeds if your strictly keeping to under 15 of them. Besides that, any leave or flower brew seems to have very sporadic results, from no effect to hospital visits.
I haven’t finished all of Castanedas books yet but praying the subject is revisited. I found the description of Datura as an ally as well as the detail of its preparation one of the most fascinating parts of his first book.
Let me say, I don't want to discourage power plants. It's just that they tend to bend people a little out of shape.
Devil's weed tea can speed up time, so that you're watching a clock, and the hands move visibly.
But as for getting an Ally that way, that was essentially a trick don Juan used, because back in the 60s, every single anthropologist studying Indians would have given anything to be taught to use power plants. It's not obvious these days, because of Carlos. People don't realize how unique that was, back then.
Don Juan noticed that Carlos had the configuration needed for a new line, and so he did everything he could to lure him in.
That's how the lineages worked. It's nearly impossible to teach by this method, I'm trying to use here.
It's better to trick people, push their assemblage point, and teach them quickly. Then let them forget by pushing it back, and find something to entertain them between actual teaching.
The more I try to help people and fail, the more I realize that method is better.
And if you want an Ally, Cholita and I have both of Carlos' allies. The little smoke, and the Devil's weed ally.
Carlos passed them on to his private classes. But so far Cholita and I seem to be the only ones who can interact with them.
Learn to get silent, and when I send Cholita out to share them, you'll be capable of perceiving them.
> calling in a plant helper your experienced with maybe 2/3 times a year,
I'm actually anxious to see what happens to people who keep using power plants, but responsibly.
Carlos found Cholita at that Mexican mountain range where Peyote grows.
I'm not sure of the sequence of events because Cholita is too insane to go into the right details.
But Margarete was used to bring her up here, and then Carlos pretty much took over all aspects of her life.
He seems to have separated her from a lot of people.
Margarete was VERY close to Carlos. But she didn't make a fuss to end up in the limelight. When we drive in LA, Cholita often comments that Carlos used to eat at a particular restaurant. When I ask if she ate with him too, she says it was Margarete who was there, and told her later.
Margarete was still alive as of 2017, but blind. Cholita hasn't gone to visit her since then, as far as I can get her to tell.
> Was she ever outwardly effected the plant round the campfire?
I was only 12. She scared the hell out of me, even though she was a kindly old woman.
John was more interesting. He was the Devil's weed sorcerer. I used to play with his kids, but not enough times to remember his dwelling.
Best I can recall is that he had a trailer with bottles of plants visible outside.
> Besides that, any leave or flower brew seems to have very sporadic results,
Not if you are extremely patient. Make a huge batch of the tea, and pasteurize it by letting it sit in a instant pot on warm, in a mason jar. Measure the temp of the water, and make sure it exceeds 150F. Then leave it in there for 6 hours.
If you don't have a complete lab like me, just put an egg in the water for 2 hours. If it turns whitish, the temp is fine. It might even turn spooky, like a transparent egg.
That's a good sign the temp is above 150F
Pasteurized, it'll keep in that bottle. When you want some, just try a tiny bit on the tongue first, spit it out, and wait a half hour. If there's no reaction, pour half a shot glass worth and try that.
Work your way up with the same batch. And don't make the batch so strong that a half a shot glass is fatal! Start weak.
Morongo has Devil's weed growing all along the main road, brought up from Mexico by sorcerers hundreds of years ago.
I suspect Ruby and John knew the doses well because they knew those plants all their lives.
If you visit Morongo, DON'T pick the plants! And stick some money in the tall clay jar in the museum.
There is still a Devil's weed cult there. Visit the casino and study the paintings!
No, Carlos didn't learn there. Someone pointed him to another sorcerer. As Ruby said, there were people like don Juan all over that valley, before the settlers came and drove them out.
> I found the description of Datura as an ally
I have it. I'll share it.
I'll see if I can get around to that wiki a little, and find a good example of how that Ally behaves.
When it helps, the results are spectacular!
It scares the shit out of me most of the time.
Note: The "Customers who viewed Not for Innocent Ears:" link on amazon also shows other publications, which seem to be from Malki press, about others in that Cahuilla tradition.
Mukat's People, The Cahuilla Indians of Southern California, and The Heart is Fire.
They also publish my father's book, Willie Boy. A movie of it was made down at Morongo, which is when I realized I was around Carlos. Someone pointed to him.
I didn't verify if that was true. He was both a revered and hated man among the Indians in southern Cal.

So I’m really loving your comments Dan.
I don’t know who Cholita is but I’m assuming one of Castanedas students as I presume you are also.
To hear that the ingredients and method of the little smoke are actually known by an alive human being right now is pretty earth shattering for me, I’d assumed it was all long gone.
I’ve been reading some of your posts on getting silent and working my way through all of Castanedas books so hopefully it’s something I’m comfortable with in the future. These sorts of practices are all I’ve ever been interested in.
Your method of pasteurising the weed is interesting I’d like to try it. Doesn’t it contradict what Don Juan said about not ingesting the leaves or stems? As opposed to the roots and seeds.
And yes, I’d be extremely eager to hear your further description on Datura as an ally, it’s an area of extreme interest and inspiration to me right now.

I don’t know who Cholita is but I’m assuming one of Castanedas students as I presume you are also.
Carlos paired us off for her protection. She got along on her own for 25 years, but then went mad.
She's a westerly dreamer, like Josefina.
I guess they always go mad.
To hear that the ingredients and method of the little smoke are actually known by an alive human being right now
Certainly not me! I was given the ally, I didn't use the smoke to lure it.
But Carlos was given it also. The smoke just made him able to perceive it.
A shitload of shrooms would do the same thing. Don Juan just enticed him and set up the intent with all the procedures.
Doesn’t it contradict what Don Juan said about not ingesting the leaves or stems? As opposed to the roots and seeds.
Maybe he was just trying to make it take a long time, so Carlos had to keep coming back?
However, there are different things in different parts.
Carlos once was accused of being a cruel trickster, when a stoner asked him if Marijuana could be used as a power plant.
My answer: Of course! How do you explain Rosicrucians otherwise?
Carlos' answer: Yes, but the stems are the strongest part. Make a tea.
At the time, it wasn't well known that the little dots of sugar on the leaves are the only part which contains THC. And the only sugar on the stems is what fell off the leaves and got stuck.
However, it's well known now, that the stems contain other substances.
So it may in fact have been true.
THC can summon hypnogogic images, to help you become familiar with them.
80mg ought to do the job, but you'll feel like throwing up.
Once the nausea is over, lay on your back and gaze at the ceiling. Try both eyes open and closed, in subdued bedroom light.
The active period of hypnogogic images isn't very long. Perhaps 15-30 minutes.
But if you deliberately gaze at them, it'll loosen your assemblage point.
That'll make it easier to learn to see colors.
I know this from other people, I don't use it. If you use it, your ability to see color splotches in darkness is seriously reduced.
As with alcohol. Any intoxicant leaves a hangover, and any hangover makes it harder.
On the other hand, the THC hangover won't affect your practices more than a day, which is why my favorite thing is young beautiful women, wine, and some edibles.
My last hobby was a 22 year old drop dead gorgeous woman, who would commonly drive 80mpg around a freeway transition, smoking on a bong.
I knew I could die, but it was worth it to see that!
She was fearless and super energetic, and still optimistic.
That's why sorcerers like young women.
It's not about sex.

Ok, warning…
Carlos did this to use at least once a month.
Don’t take it personally.
I’m trying to give the “authentic feel” of being in his private classes. Insecurity. That was the feel.
And from a historical point of view, I hope to correct one more misconception about how Carlos behaved, so the biographers don't go completely unchallenged.
Carlos was a little like an angry nun with a ruler, in a private school.
The ruler isn’t just for show.
He’d occasionally see something at an energetic level, or someone would make a remark with serious embedded syntactic commands.
Then we’d be in trouble for something we didn’t understand.
A classic example: The owner of “Blue Bird Bakery” in Century City, ended up in that position because one of the witches offered her a pair of shoes and she said, “I can’t wear those!”
Carlos tossed her out on the spot.
But he gave her $10K so that everyone else wouldn't feel sorry for her, and she started the bakery.
It now sits nearly buried by overgrowth, next to the Mall. I wouldn’t even have noticed it, if Cholita hadn’t pointed to it as we went by.
I'd always wondered why private class students kept telling me that was a great bakery, and I needed to buy stuff from there.
You have to get silent to realize the futility of trying to teach sorcery by talking.
Go read what Kirshnamurti said about that. Or what the first Taoist said.
The problem is, everyone is stuck in a big chicken coop, awaiting their time to be dinner.
Not only is it all they’ve ever known, but if they try to stick even a toe outside the cage, the other chickens will begin to peck on their head to stop them.
And the chickens, who have only ever known the life chickens share in that miserable cage, are obsessed with the pecking order.
That’s their entire focus.
The same happens when you try to teach sorcery. To them you become just another chicken in the coop. Maybe one at the top of the pecking order. But still, they behave the same way they always have.
As Cholita said to me this morning, when she ordered me to give her a ride but wouldn't tell me to where, “Why are you looking at me like that? Do you want your mommy?”
The only escape from the chicken coop is to hurtle your head at the fence until you either break through, or bleed to death.
You have to intend it.

hurtle your head at the fence until you either break through, or bleed to death.
Maybe that's the advantage of entheogens: force and speed. Going the slow route, as those on their own without a double being in their midst are forced to do, need time to gather momentum to aim at the fence/cage.
An entheogen kind of shoots you out of a canon at it, denting it and weakening it's structure. Then when you aim your weaker self-generated momentum at that spot...there's a better chance of breaking through.
There nothing wrong with strategy and efficiency.

You have a point.
If we get more experience, maybe the people in here using power plants will tip off everyone else, on a faster way to break that chicken coop fence.
I just worry they'll be bent out of shape, like some who visit there and sound a little off.

Castaneda's recommendation was the reverse: to use entheogens after reaching a more advanced point of stability. He said that the boost, if you do it right, can be inconceivable.
But you yourself have said that you believe it would up-end the energetic configurations you've cultivated so laboriously.
So, we'll eventually need some more data...one way or another.

Yea, but I'm not going to provide it.
Intoxicants are fine, even THC, caffeine, nicotine.
None will permanently mix up what you've learned to do.
Hallucinogens and women. Those are dangerous!

So you've meant that don Juan's method of teaching Carlos was much more efficient than what you are trying to do with your descriptions and consulting people, this is the bottomline of it?
I agree in general. As I am trying to follow your advices myself, I always feel this pressure from inside and outside to discard it and stop.
So then you just grab your intent and hold on to it, fighting harder with each single day. Awareness of death and own stupidity helps a lot.

I was trying to learn to use my Fairy to move assemblage points. Before Cholita that is.
To do that, I had to make her very solid and real. I decided it would be funny if she changed into a pumpkin for me, so I could toss her like the headless horseman.
My idea was to learn to make her so real, everyone could see her. Then if I tossed her at someone's shoulder, she ought to be able to dent their luminous shell.
I got some spectacular explosions on my bedroom wall. And she obeyed and made a very convincing pumpkin.
I just couldn't get her to keep the lid on.
But in the end, I didn't have anyone to experiment on.
With Cholita I do.
Except, she's an inorganic being magnet, and I don't have my solid fairy anymore.
She's flat and barely there, if I can manage to find her at all.

Technique (based on your coments on people only having silent moments in the shower):
Take a bath in a dark bathroom, with showerhead above running (and bathtub draining from top) continuously, water making white noise. Feel free to leave just a sliver of light. The combination of water, mirrors, abnormal execution of bath/shower routine (not-doing) and relaxed vigilance (people don’t generally sleep in the bathtub) makes this effective very fast, especially with harping on 2nd att point and watching.
This should be even more fun in Asia where bathtubs are allowed to overflow and drain on the plastic floor near the side.
This should also be easy to do in hotels as most have no windows in bathrooms.
Make sure you are well rested and have non-slip floor or towels on it so you feel safe. If your coordination is not good or it’s difficult to get in/out of the tub, use a different technique.
...what do you think? (tried once, color splotches within minutes of starting!)

Should work great!
But you'll get wrinkly skin.
It'll also attract inorganic beings. They can push on water.
They can also hold humans down. But I don't think they'd try to kill anyone. That's a loss to them also.

This is basically the description of a sensory deprivation floatation tank.
