Poll: What do you think about a Mastodon server for Castaneda?

First off, Mastodon is basically an (optionally) invite only decentralized implementation Twitter (so to speak) that is implemented with ActivityPub. I know there are some Mastodon communities for witches, but they are just for sexually confused, pre-teen girls who still read Harry Potter. Currently I’m not aware of any Mastodon servers for Castaneda or any for sorcery that I would recommend.

Why Mastodon, isn’t reddit good enough? It’s not a really mutually exclusive choice, both can obviously exist; I already know that there is a private sub for r/Castaneda now, but who really wants to read annoying ads? Personally I’ve been on reddit for a decade and it’s just a big ad farm now with high user churn; this sub is the only one left for me I contribute to that I really feel hasn’t soured yet. Let’s hope Netflix doesn’t make a movie or series about CC otherwise we’re screwed here—let’s be thankful that the academic community discredited CC before reddit existed. Mastodon isn’t perfect but I’ve seen a growing trend of many subs moving to Mastodon for good reason. A community can only get so large before it becomes political or a dumpster for memes.

I personally don’t use Mastodon much other than the indieweb community because, to my knowledge there really isn’t a great way to discover communities, which is both good and bad. I also don’t like Twitter but that’s not inherent in its sub/pub design, it’s because it evolved to be a place where users just make witty satirical posts or sly political commentary. I also don’t like “chat” platforms like discord for the same reason I left Facebook over a decade ago, which is they encourage nepotism and everything becomes a contest of whom can grab the most attention. I also dislike chat platforms or social networks because I think it’s folly to expose personal details that can be used to incriminate or victimize you later on when say for example you are apply for a job; CC certainly become more secretive later on in his life for good reason. I really am not a Mastodon fanboy either, I actually think that it’s still not a mature platform and many of the Mastodon clients can be confusing at times—but I prefer it to reddit (at least now) or other social media.

I’m just throwing this proposition out there for this community, the mods, and dan to see if anyone shares my sentiments. If there seems to be a consensus not necessarily to move to Mastodon but to have a server for those whom prefer the platform, then I can certainly help set it up for a rainy day so to speak. I actually think this sub could be a nice way to vet users for inviting to Mastodon because I certainly don’t think everyone is cut out to be a sorcerer like DJ always said, but at the same time we shouldn’t dismiss newcomers. Anyways that’s all I have to say for now—I in no way am expressing malaise about this awesome community nor hijack it—it’s just an off the cuff proposal at the moment.

This is my first post here so I don't have much say in this matter, but I think there should be some kind of public backup plan in case this sub goes down.

Not as a second platform though, not with this level of activity anyway.

It's a response to the fear that Reddit might go bad, and try to pull the same shit Yahoo! (Verizon) did when it summarily deleted all those old groups from the '90s without allowing people to back up their data; claiming that it owned everything those people had created, and since they couldn't make any money off of it anymore they didn't value it and could erase it from existence.

Maybe we should resign ourselves to seeing a few ads if it keeps the shop open.

You never know how good you have it huh! It's astounding how much worse things can always get in the human world.

You make a lot of good points. And we were briefly bouncing around ideas for different/backup platforms on the private sub just after we set it up. Specifically a workaround for video sharing, because native video hosting is disabled on all private subreddits.

Does mastodon allow video hosting?

My initial reaction to Mastodon as a whole is to let it mature a bit longer. But why not reserve a seat there (free?) in the meantime 😐

Edit: it doesn't seem to have an "official" Android app/client yet, rather a bunch of misc. ones with few downloads/lackluster reviews.

I know that you can attach files to “toots” which are just what Mastodon calls posts, so I would imagine that includes video.

What I think I may do is set up a Castaneda Mastodon server in the next few months when I have time and announce it to this sub. It seems like so far users here would like some sort of Plan B. I’ll communicate with the mods before I set up a server to go over how things should be managed.

Thankfully Mastodon is growing very fast, so by next year there may be an Android client available.

https://joinmastodon.org/ for more info, and it confirmed that video is allowed

it all sounds great, but that 500 character limit on posts/comments is a real bitch

many of u/danl999's posts and comments, for instance, would never fit into that constraint

Yeah it is a bitch. I think that there’s a way around it though where posts get “folded”, but I’ll have to look more into it.

If you use Boost (Android app) instead of the official app, you won't see any ads, but you do lose access to Chat.

And on desktop using AdBlock/uBlock in your browser eliminates most ads, and other add-ons/plugins can help eliminate the rest.

Don't have any opinion on this, but for me CC is the only reddit I use as well.

Probably other platforms will be monetized as well, if not now then later on. The best solution would be a dedicated forum/server or something by a member here, which would have to be ad-free. But that means someone has to take care of it all, which means work, even if "just" monitoring it all, taking care of spambots and whatnot.

IIRC could be an option as well

Do you know any good clients? It’s been a long time since I’ve used IIRC and it seemed ephemeral compared to Mastodon to me.

Rn I am just using mIRC until the trial expires. I will probably try different ones after that and I can get back to you
