I went and searched through the all-in-one PDF (of Castaneda's books) for the best reference passage on habits, and there were simply too many to choose from.

This visual is worth a thousand words.

Ina the bear eventually broke free from her imposed neurology, and likes to climb trees now.

In the same way don Juan demonstrated the ease at which one can succumb to the "will" that glues our assemblage point in some customary position...he did it many times...the transformation when Carlitos was being stalked by La Catalina...the old man he turned into at the market square...
The two cats that fell into Carlitos management after the death of a friend...
All of these events illustrate to us the power our habits have over our well-being...
But the true fluidity that don Juan was actually demonstrating is how "controlled folly" is the difference between "will" - an alignment of the emanations which holds the assemblage point in a particular position versus "intent" - the alignment which assists in shifting the assemblage point...

In the same way that events on the left side are rendered untranslatable and difficult to recall from the right side, so too does your habitual position "forget" what your impeccability feels like....
If you don't tend that fire...if you lapse into complacency that habitual position will exert its stranglehold upon you once again...
The River Lethe of Greek mythology comes up so often for me precisely because of this anamnesis which is required in order to "bootstrap" yourself out of "the old man" mind set that threatens the pyre of spirit...
The river Lethe shows up first as this obstacle between the common man and the warrior...then later as "the wall of fog" in order to pierce the veil that seperates in "dreaming".

I find I must "throw" myself into situations which demand my "burning spirit" in order to slough off the encrustations of my habitual self...once engaged "my cup runneth over" and I am operating on "the energy of attending"...requiring practically zero effort no matter the difficulty...
...reclaiming "unbending intent"...but we are not automatons in doing so and the memory of your connecting link to INTENT is the shatterer of illusions IF you can pull out of your illusions enough to remember it...a bit of a paradox there...

I am (this)
I am (that)
No
You are a burning spirit
Anything else will defeat you

With no pitty everything becomes that bear. Even tho it can scape the round and round it can't scape its nature.

Seeing routines is like that circle the bear created. A circle of energy. A broken path thru the grassy hills of energy in this great world. For this you have to be able to see and maybe then, the revelation of what a small push from a nagual does.

You can always push the bear 🤣
