100% Newb - just trying to find a helpful community. Experiences with lucid dreaming, hypnagogic states and possible Astral projection.
Experiences
I am going to create this post as a mix of introduction for my experiences and myself. I have never heard of anything on this forum. I have been bouncing from community to community trying to find a group to work with. I plan to read the books I see mentioned in the posts and try the dark room method pinned at the top.
So a quick into - I have only started experimenting with heightened states of awareness in the spring of last year. However, prior to that I have had an affinity with dreaming my whole life. If I don't like what is taking place, I can step in and take control of my dream body and become lucid. By this I mean, pause, rewind, make changes or just wake myself up. In the rare occasion that I can't wake myself up, I have called out to my fiancé "while sleeping" to shake me awake.
Well then, last year I was emotionally stressed and did what I usually do when I need a break – sleep. However, it usually takes me a while to fall asleep – it is not something that comes easily for me and I can lie awake for hours trying to achieve it. So on this particular day I was also having a weird breathing issue that was causing me to focus on my breathing. (It was like my brain shut off and wouldn’t breathe in unless I made a conscious effort to do so). That combined with a mental mantra to keep my mind quiet and to not think about anything led to an interesting experience that flung me down this path of knowledge
First it felt like someone (I assumed my fiancé at the time.) had climbed in to bed with me. For this to be happening I assumed I had just fallen asleep. I just let it rock. Then it felt like that being got up from the bed and left. I popped up calling my fiancé’s name only to realize only a few minutes had passed and I was alone. It wasn’t my first off hand experience so I shrugged it off and went back to sleep. The moment I put my head on the pillow – I heard a burst of jumbled voices talking over each other. I tried to ignore it and it kept getting louder. Then I heard one singular voice yell something over the rest and a shot up out of bed. After that I started down this rabbit hole of research.
This experience isn’t very on par with what I have been reading here, but the following ones I think are.
I went to take a nap. During the period where I was still trying to fall asleep I started to see colors (happens a lot with me.) However, this time I saw a purple light that caught my attention. It started to move out of the center of my vision so I followed it and it felt like I was peeling out of body. However, before it could be completed, it felt like I was slammed back in my body. This was an accidental event.
I intentionally tried to astral project. My goal was to stay mentally focused on a spot in the darkness while letting my body fall sleep. Eventually I fell asleep, but was still mentally aware and immediately knew I was dreaming. I said it out loud and ended up “back in my body… awake but not awake”. I couldn’t move, knew my eyes were closed but could see everything in my line of sight.
Not to sure what steps to take from this particular scenario. I started to feel something brushing past and between my fingers and sometimes landing on my palm. I couldn’t see anything so I just said hello. This led to a brief conversation with a being, that by the end of the experience, I could only get the barest glimpses of.
At the end of this conversation everything goes back to darkness. I saw a light that caught my attention and followed it. I ended up peeling away from my body and floating on my back staring at the ceiling from inches away. I then got sucked past/in to a black void with red squiggly lines. I see a couple white lights and attempt to follow after them. It was like a light at the end of a tunnel. However, I couldn’t reach it and started to pay more attention to the darkness around me.
Fears lead me to the decision to snap out of it (not realizing how hard it was to get their in the first place.) I did snap out of it and found myself paralyzed back in my body. Had another brief conversation with the being and then my phone alarm caused that reality to fade away as I opened my eyes.
I have another experience similar to the one I described above as well as a few interesting dreams. It is interesting that they just cam out with that study on communicating with lucid dreamers. One of my goals was to Lucid dream and/or Astral project but still use my physical body to vocally communicate to those by my body. I figured, with my ability to ask my fiancé to wake me from nightmares, that this may be within my grasp.
If I have stumbled in to the right place, please do recommend books geared toward people who have 0 knowledge of this. I had to Google almost every term I came upon.
If you don’t think this is a good fit for this community. Just let me know and the search will continue. I do plan to pop over to
r/astral
projection as well and post pretty much this same thing. However, everything I stumbled in to on this forum has caught my interest.
