I'm jazzed about that artist's illustrations alone!

They have a Facebook group, and this is one of their newest posts about the production of the next episode:

I hope they don't get too entangled in the details of the Native American mythos, to the detriment of the actual message. But since they seem committed to sticking with the actual narrative from the books without modification, it will shine through regardless.

What's wrong with Native American mythos? Wasn't Don Juan Native American? It could be seen as erasure. On the other hand it could also be seen as appropriation. I don't know.

I don’t think he meant anything was wrong with any mythos, but that the mythos was not the point of the books. As far as appropriation/erasure, people looking for offense will find it regardless.

I don't know. Don Juan was a Native American so it seems appropriate to think of him as an expression of the native mythos. I thinks its good to honor that in the artwork also. It is nice artwork.

See all the 'inventory warrior' posts to understand why it's hopeful they don't get too caught up in it. It's easy to lose the message when the focus is distracted.

Also, the dialogue behind worrying about whether things are 'erasure' or 'appropriation' may serve as a hindrance if you lend it too much energy.

I think i understand the concern. And I agree in part. On the other i do belief indigenous spiritual practices and beliefs are better understood in cultural context. Its impossible in my point of view to truly grasp the meanings without acknowledging the culture in which it arose. If there's a concern about people pretending to be sorcerers, I totally understand that.

The first one was well done, I definitely enjoyed it. I did feel like DJ was overplayed and way more serious and grim than the jokester he seemed to be in the books. Nonetheless I'm looking forward to the second installment. They're doing a great thing.

Nope. But I do support them in what they intend to produce, as they continue to visually portray scenes from the books AS THEY WERE WRITTEN.

That last part is key!
